Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 November 2026
1. Who handles the data
The data controller is Emanuele Blasi, Belgium. For any privacy question or to exercise your rights, write to [email protected].
Parfumality is a free service that suggests the fragrances closest to the personality you describe. It doesn't ask you to sign up and doesn't ask for your name, email or any other contact details.
2. What data we process
We process data at two moments: for a few seconds while we calculate your result, and then in a statistical archive that doesn't reveal who you are.
| Data | During the calculation | In the statistical archive |
|---|---|---|
| The free text you write | Used for the calculation and sent to OpenAI (section 4) | Stored after automatically removing email addresses, phone numbers and web addresses |
| Chosen categories, positions on the pairs, “You see yourself in…” words, page language | Used for the calculation | Stored |
| Suggested fragrances and scores | Calculated | Stored |
| IP address | Used to work out your country, to choose which shops to show you on the results page, and to limit abuse (too many requests from the same address) | Not stored: only the country is kept |
| Date and time of the request | Recorded | Stored |
Please don't include personal details in the free text (name, contact details, health information or other sensitive data). The automatic filter removes email addresses, phone numbers and web addresses, but it can't catch everything.
If the text contains offensive content, no calculation is made and nothing is stored. The servers hosting the site may record IP addresses in technical logs for security reasons, for a short period (section 5).
3. Why we process it and on what basis
| Purpose | Legal basis (GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Calculating and showing you the fragrances that suit you best | Performance of the service you request (Art. 6(1)(b)) |
| Protecting the site from abuse and attacks (request limits, offensive-content check, technical logs) | Legitimate interest in keeping the service secure (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Statistics and quality control of the results | Legitimate interest in checking that the service works and improving it (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Market analyses shared with third parties (for example fragrance brands or retailers) | Aggregated, anonymous data only, never individual answers or texts |
The statistical archive contains no data that can identify you. For this reason, once stored, that data is no longer personal data.
We don't use your data for targeted advertising and we don't build profiles linked to your identity.
4. Who receives the data
We don't sell or hand over your data. Only these providers process it on our behalf, bound by a data processing agreement:
| Provider | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Ireland Limited | Checks that the free text contains no offensive content, translates it into English and turns it into a numerical representation to compare it with the fragrances | Ireland and United States |
| Render Services, Inc. | Hosts the site, the server that calculates the results and the statistical archive | Servers in Frankfurt (Germany); company based in the United States |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Manages the domain and protects the site from attacks and abnormal traffic; to do so it sees visitors’ IP addresses | Worldwide server network; company based in the United States |
Under OpenAI’s terms for API services, the texts sent are not used to train its models and may be kept for up to 30 days to monitor abuse, unless the law requires otherwise.
Transfers to the United States are protected as follows: for OpenAI, by the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission; for Render and Cloudflare, by their participation in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and, failing that, by the same standard contractual clauses.
5. How long we keep it
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| IP address used during the calculation | The duration of the request; then only the country remains |
| Server technical logs | 30 days at most, unless an abuse is being investigated |
| Statistical archive (no identifying data) | No time limit: it contains no personal data and is used to follow trends over the years |
Because the statistical archive isn’t linked to your identity, we can’t find or delete one person’s answers on request (Art. 11 GDPR).
6. Cookies and browser storage
Parfumality doesn't use profiling, advertising or third-party analytics cookies. It only uses your browser’s storage for two necessary functions:
- Day/night theme: remembers your choice until you change it or clear the site’s data.
- Results: keep your answers and the suggested fragrances to show them on the results page; they are deleted when you close the tab.
This data stays on your device and is never sent to us. The PDF and the image to share are also created on your device. No consent is needed for these functions.
7. Purchase links
On the results page, next to each fragrance, you’ll find, when there is one, a link to the page of an online shop that sells it; where there isn’t one yet, the button is greyed out and says “coming soon”. The shops shown depend on your country (worked out from your IP address, which isn’t stored), because each shop serves only some countries. Some are affiliate links: if you buy after opening one, the shop pays us a small commission, at no extra cost to you.
- Commissions don’t affect the results: the order of the fragrances depends only on how well they match your answers and, when two fragrances are almost equal, on their quality.
- It’s an ordinary link: Parfumality doesn’t record who opens it and doesn’t follow you on the shop’s site.
- On the shop’s site, its own privacy policy applies. The shop and CJ Affiliate, which runs the affiliate programme, may use their own cookies, including to know that you came from Parfumality.
Shops and affiliate programmes currently linked: FragranceShop.com, through the CJ Affiliate programme. When the shop sells the fragrance in a different concentration (for example Eau de Toilette instead of Eau de Parfum), the page says so next to the button. Other shops will be added here.
8. Minimum age
The service is intended for people aged 16 and over. If you are under 16, please use it only with a parent or guardian.
9. Your rights
For the personal data we process (in practice, the IP address during the calculation and in the technical logs) you have the right to:
- know what data we hold and receive a copy (access);
- have it corrected or deleted;
- ask us to restrict its use;
- object to processing based on legitimate interest.
Write to [email protected]: we reply within one month. As explained in section 5, answers already stored in the statistical archive can’t be linked to you, so we can’t find them.
You can also lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Autorité de protection des données / Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit), Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels, autoriteprotectiondonnees.be, or with the authority of the country where you live.
10. Changes
We may update this policy, for example if we add visit statistics, new affiliate shops or new providers. The date of the last update is shown at the top of the page.
